About the Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care

The Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care (OECECC) was launched by the then Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood Education and Child Care, the Hon Maxine McKew MP on 18 March 2008. The Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care is responsible for delivering the Australian Government’s key commitments on early childhood education and child care, as well as guiding major national policy reform.

High quality child care plays an important role in a child’s educational and developmental outcomes, and enables parents to participate in the workforce and broader community.

Who operates the Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care?

The Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care has been established within the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). The office incorporates the functions of the Children’s Group, from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), and the early childhood education functions from the former Department of Education, Science and Training.

The Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care is responsible for providing the leadership to achieve a nationally consistent system of quality, accessible and affordable early childhood education and child care for Australian families.
